Are Elden Ring and Bloodborne the same game?

When good old Miyazaki releases a game, the millions of Souls fans look for connections between them. And it’s not hard, as all the games have a similar aura and From Software is all about recycling enemies and weapons.

To date, only Sekiro has managed to stay away from the Souls universe by being a title set in feudal Japan, very different from the games they have been releasing since 2009 (Demon’s Souls).

The reason, as we said, that the games are thought to share a universe is that the stories in the developer From Software’s games are often ambiguous, leading to speculation that some of them are related in some way.

And while it’s never been confirmed, that hasn’t stopped compelling theories from circulating. Take, for example, a theory posted on Reddit this week that speculates that Elden Ring and Bloodborne might share a universe.

The Midlands and The Dream, one and the same place

This theory comes from Redditor Flunkiebubs, who believes that Bloodborne and Elden Ring share a universe: “I believe that Elden Ring’s Midlands are The Dream of Bloodborne,” writes the user.

Bloodborne’s dream realm is full of absurd monstrosities and horrible entities. The same can be said of Elden Ring, so it’s possible that From Software’s latest game will take place within the same reality.

As the Redditor notes, the worlds of each game “blur the line between life and what comes after”. Both games also feature beings from other dimensions.

The theory states that entering the Midlands (known as “crossing the mist”) is a metaphor for the dream and that Elden Ring takes place within a dream.

Only by entering this dream world can an entity reach “a higher plane of being”, which is possibly what led to the creation of the Elden Ring Outer Gods.

A union of universes via gods

Later in the Reddit post, the user makes more specific comparisons between the two games: “The Outer Gods of Elden Ring are the Great Ones of Bloodborne.

In Elden Ring, the Outer Gods are mysterious entities that influence the Midlands, but never appear in physical form. They are apparently responsible for the events that occur in the Elden Ring, and some of them are mentioned throughout the game, such as the Formless Mother, an entity associated with Mohg, Lord of Blood.

As for the Great Ones of Bloodborne, they are all-powerful entities that serve as the game’s antagonists. They look like gods and include Amygdala, Orphan Kos and even Rom, the Void Spider, all of whom seem to fit the profile of Elden Ring’s Outer Gods.

The Redditor claims that the formless Mother of Elden Ring and the formless Aedon of Bloodborne are one and the same. Even more compelling is that, according to the theory, Ranni of the Dark Moon possibly serves the Lunar Presence, which is a powerful Great Being in Bloodborne.

While this theory may be nothing more than imagination, it is intriguing and makes sense given the connections between the two games. It’s certainly possible, given From Software’s cryptic storytelling method.
