Head to the coastline of Fortnite’s Battle Royale island and you might catch a glimpse of something strange in the water. It’s not an illusion: there really is a castle floating around the outskirts of the map, but what’s even stranger is the fact that it’s riding on the back of a giant sea monster.

The sea monster is only the latest development in a long and mysterious saga that began with Fortnite’s Season 8 finale. After the finale event, a giant eye appeared beneath the castle at Polar Peak, and it was clear that whatever the eye was attached to was trying to get out.  For some time now, players have been speculating that Battle Royale will be getting some sort of massive multiplayer boss battle. Most theories seemed to imply that this frozen creature, dubbed “Cattus,” would be the subject of this hypothetical fight. Some players even speculated that the monster would be part of a Godzilla tie-in event.

Though it seems that the Godzilla theory didn’t come to fruition, the Cattus monster has finally broken free of its icy prison. The castle at Polar Peak is gone, replaced with the giant crater seen above. A trail of gigantic three-toed footprints can be seen leading from the ruins to the edge of the map near Snobby Shores, where they disappear. For a few days, it wasn’t clear where the giant monster had gone, but then the answer became clear: he went for a swim.

Spotted the Sea Monster swimming around with Polar Peak from FortNiteBR

Eagle-eyed players spotted the Polar Peak castle floating in the distance off the coast of the island. As seen in this video, the castle floats along for a bit before submerging again and disappearing beneath the waves. There doesn’t appear to be a set schedule to when and where the sea monster appears, so you’ll have to get a little lucky if you want to spot it for yourself.

At this point, we’re about halfway done with Season 9, so it seems likely that whatever this mysterious creature may be, it’ll have something to do with the Season 9 finale. As more of the Fortbyte mystery gets revealed, it also seems to indicate that giant monsters will be playing a role in the events to come. Maybe Fortnite players will finally be getting that boss battle after all.

Alex's first experience with video games came at the tender young age of 12, when his parents gave him and his brothers a PlayStation 2 for Christmas. They’ve probably been regretting that mistake ever since, because as soon he finished his first lap in Gran Turismo 3, Alex was hooked for life. In addition to writing for Softonic, Alex has turned that love of games into a voice acting career, and has voiced everything from grizzled old soldiers to vampire lords. When he's not gaming or getting behind the microphone, Alex can probably be found wandering the woods around Boston or putting together some new culinary delight in his kitchen.
