HBO is very selective about its series, and even with its most significant IPs like Game of Thrones, it carefully considers before giving the green light to a project. That’s why when a new HBO show comes out, the product is meticulously crafted, and critics agree that the work done is spectacular.
This trend led to The Idol, one of their latest series starring and driven by The Weeknd, being met with anticipation. It had everything going for it, from the showrunner of Euphoria (Sam Levinson) to a very charismatic lead: Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp. However, the series went so poorly that it quickly became the lowest-rated HBO show… and, as could be expected, it has been canceled.
Goodbye to The Weeknd and Sam Levinson’s series
It was an expected and evident piece of news, but until now, it had not been made public: “The Idol” is canceled after Season 1. This has been exclusively announced by Entertainment Weekly after speaking with one of the platform’s spokespersons. The HBO representative stated the following:
“The Idol has been one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased with the strong audience response. However, after much thought and consideration, both HBO and the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We are grateful to the creators, the cast, and the team for their incredible work.”
Although there were discussions about continuing the series with a second season, the truth is that the first season perfectly concludes the story it aims to tell. And despite not being overly attention-grabbing for the audience, it provides a logical closure to the narrative of Levinson and The Weeknd.
