The production wheel never stops turning. It doesn’t matter if we’re still working on one game; when it’s from a popular franchise, the next one is probably already in development. And if it’s Ubisoft or EA, its development is likely well advanced. That’s the case with Assassin’s Creed; even though we’re still enjoying the fantastic Assassin’s Creed Mirage, talks about the next installment of the franchise have already begun. Although, this time, it’s not because Ubisoft has already started the marketing machinery.
Thanks to an image on writer Pierre Boudreau’s LinkedIn profile, we’ve been able to see what appears to be the first image of the protagonist character from Assassin’s Creed Red, the next major installment in the franchise. The image shows a hooded woman wielding a katana, with a Japanese castle in the background, and next to her is the Assassin’s Creed logo forming a sort of Japanese seal.
How legitimate is this image? We don’t know. What we do know is that it fits perfectly with everything we know so far about the franchise’s short and medium-term future. Last September, Ubisoft revealed in their roadmap that one of their six upcoming games in the franchise is called Assassin’s Creed Red. Additionally, alongside Assassin’s Creed Hexe, this will be one of the next two major games in the franchise. Therefore, it aligns perfectly with the information we already have.
Furthermore, Boudreau is a writer in the Assassin’s Creed series, and he has already removed the image from his profile. Additionally, the person matches the studio, as Assassin’s Creed Red is supposed to be developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the team to which Boudreau belongs.
This doesn’t definitively prove that the image is real, but it does invite us to believe that it might be true. Considering that an Assassin’s Creed set in Japan is something fans have been demanding for years, and a female protagonist would bring a refreshing change to the franchise, all we can do now is hope that it turns out to be true.
