Yesterday, Microsoft surprised us all by announcing that it was ending support for Android apps on Windows 11 through the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). This feature of the company’s latest operating system was very useful for many users, who have been using it since its debut two and a half years ago.
The announcement was made through a banner on the WSA support page, which said the following: “Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). As a result, the Amazon Appstore on Windows (which allows downloading and installing Android apps on Windows) and all WSA-dependent applications and games will no longer receive support starting from March 5, 2025. Technical support will remain available to customers until then.”
The announcement also specifies what will happen to those who already have the Amazon Appstore or any Android app installed: “Customers who have installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps before March 5, 2024 will continue to have access to those apps until the expiration date of March 5, 2025″.
By affecting the Amazon Appstore, Amazon itself has started sending emails to its users informing them of the news: “Dear customer, we are writing to inform you about the changes in the availability of Amazon Appstore on Windows 11. Starting from March 6, 2024, Amazon Appstore will no longer be available for download from the Microsoft Store on Windows 11 devices. After March 5, 2025, Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 and all applications downloaded from it will no longer be supported.”
