We all want a new Gears of War, after a successful reboot of the series with Gears 4. Now, we have learned that if The Coalition is working on Gears 6, People Can Fly might be working on a spin-off.
According to a recently published press release, People Can Fly has just signed a production and publishing agreement with Microsoft for an upcoming game called Project Maverick, and there are strong indications that it could be a new Gears of War title.
People Can Fly indeed has a strong track record with Microsoft’s IP, as they handled the PC port of the original Gears of War in 2007 and led the development of the spin-off Gears of War: Judgment in 2013.
Despite the success of their latest release, Outriders (an action RPG published by Square Enix), it didn’t generate long-term royalties for People Can Fly. This may have prompted the Polish team to seek another partnership.
The press release speaks of up to US$50 million
The publisher’s total budget for the game’s production ranges between $30 and $50 million.
Although the document doesn’t specifically mention Gears, given the developer’s history, it seems logical. The franchise’s latest release was also a spin-off, Gears Tactics, a game similar to XCOM, developed by Splash Damage and launched in early 2020.
The Coalition, the main developer, most recently released Gears 5 in October 2019. It became Microsoft’s most successful launch since Halo 4 and was the top Game Pass release at that time.
There were rumors that The Coalition was working on some parallel projects, but speculation suggests that they were canceled as the Vancouver-based studio refocused on the development of the franchise’s sixth main installment.
Therefore, it’s possible that these parallel projects were entrusted to the Polish studio… we will see. Hopefully, we’ll get news of a new Gears game soon.
