The Apple universe is always filled with anticipation. In this perpetually buzzing environment, it seems that we are on the verge of witnessing the arrival of a long-awaited iMac that has been eagerly anticipated by all enthusiasts of the company’s computer lineup: a larger iMac. According to a recent edition of Mark Gurman’s newsletter, a new iMac with a screen size exceeding 30 inches is said to be in the works. And its size wouldn’t be the only surprise that this computer has in store for us.

Largest iMac to make a triumphant return

Gurman’s report suggests that Apple is working on updating the iMac lineup, having skipped the generation of M2 chips entirely. In a rather predictable move, Apple seems to be developing new 24-inch iMacs and another completely new model that features a screen exceeding 30 inches.

This latter one is, arguably, the most interesting, as we have been talking for a while about how the arrival of Apple silicon to the iMac left only one screen size option. Now, with the leap to the M3 chips, Apple could bring back a larger iMac, and boy, would it be larger.

It could be a computer that serves as the successor to the old 27-inch iMac Pro, which operated on Intel Xeon CPUs. A model exceeding 30 inches in size—although we don’t know the exact number of inches—would, if the rumors are accurate, mark another significant milestone in the ongoing renewal of a product line that has always been historic for the Mac, both in terms of its journey and the appeal of owning an all-in-one computer with a large screen at a truly competitive price when compared to devices like the 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro.

With this move, the iMac would continue to evolve in the realm of Apple silicon chips, as we have already seen with the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro. However, Gurman has not provided information on the exact specifications of this 30-inch+ iMac, which means we cannot determine whether it will contain an M3, M3 Pro, or M3 Ultra chip.

In general, drawing from other product ranges like the MacBook Pro, one could expect that this larger screen size would come with at least an M3 Pro chip and potentially offer the Ultra option as well. However, this is contradicted by the existence of the 15-inch MacBook Air.

In the newsletter, Gurman mentions that the M3 chip won’t arrive in MacBooks until late this year (perhaps alongside the iPhone 15) or early 2024 (possibly alongside the Apple Vision Pro). In light of this, it remains to be seen whether this will also be the release date for the new iMacs or if we’ll have to wait a little longer. This will depend heavily on the design of this computer because, although we expect a very similar form factor to the 24-inch model we already know, the increase in power could potentially result in a slightly thicker chassis, changes in the sound system, and so on.

We must take into account that, although the rumors are intriguing, they do not go much beyond that: unconfirmed information. Cupertino-based company is known for keeping its product development plans under wraps until they are ready to be launched to the public. With that said, if Gurman’s reports are true, and Apple is indeed developing a 30-inch+ iMac with an M3 chip or its variant, we are looking at a very significant evolution in the iMac lineup and one of the computers we have been eagerly waiting to see in Apple’s catalog.
