The durability and lifespan of mobile device batteries are of paramount importance. In addition to many other technologies that help maintain battery life in iPhones, Apple has taken a new initiative to improve durability in the new iPhone 15. Thanks to a simple adjustment, the devices will now offer an option to further protect the health of their batteries.

A charging limit to extend durability

In a recent Q&A session with Allison Johnson from The Verge (via MacRumors), it was confirmed that all models of iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have a new battery health feature. This allows the devices to avoid charging beyond 80% when activated.

It’s important to mention that this new adjustment is entirely separate from the existing Optimized Battery Charging feature that previous iPhone versions offered. While Optimized Charging held the charge at 80% until the appropriate time based on the device’s daily charging routine, the new 80% limit ensures that the iPhone will never charge beyond that point.

The new setting, available in Settings > Battery > Battery Health and Charging > Optimized Charging, allows us to choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, or None.

The goal of this feature is clear: to extend the lifespan of the iPhone’s battery. By reducing the time the battery remains fully charged, it reduces stress and wear on the battery, which can result in a longer lifespan for the component.

An adjustment, it must also be noted, that may not be viable for many of us who, when leaving home, need our iPhone to have the maximum possible charge. This adjustment, remembering that we can increase the health of our iPhone battery with this trick, may be useful in certain circumstances and will help the phone’s battery stay in the best possible condition for a longer time.
