If someone wants to buy the best smartwatch in the world in 2023, the choice is clear: the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The downside is that you mainly need to have an Apple phone for it. Luckily, Samsung is working on a watch to compete with Apple.
According to reports, Samsung is working on a Galaxy Watch Ultra to compete with the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and it could be Samsung’s first smartwatch to use a Micro LED display.
This new type of display would replace the OLED used in current Galaxy Watches (such as the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6) and offers a handful of improvements.
Advantages of Micro LED over OLED
Primarily, the use of inorganic materials should eliminate any issues related to burn-ins that can occur on OLEDs during prolonged use.
This display would also be ultra-thin, as it apparently doesn’t need backlighting or a color filter, which could make the Galaxy Watch Ultra thinner than its predecessors or create room for enhanced sensors and new hardware.
The latter seems likely since, in addition to this impressive display, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra would feature an array of improved functions compared to what the regular Galaxy Watch currently offers.
If the Galaxy Watch Ultra takes inspiration from the Apple Watch Ultra, the improvements we can expect might include an enhanced chipset, a rugged design suited for more intense adventures (such as diving), and longer battery life, allowing you to wear the watch for a more extended period between charges.
Similar to the Apple Watch Ultra and its successor, it’s reasonable to expect that Samsung’s high-end wearable would cost considerably more than the regular models, if it indeed comes into existence.
But is there a Galaxy Watch Ultra on the way?
What is clear is that we will have to wait and see if the Galaxy Watch Ultra materializes, but it seems plausible that a high-end Galaxy smartwatch is on the way.
Samsung has not yet unveiled a Galaxy Watch 6 Pro, allowing the latest-generation Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to compete with the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Although the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is impressive, it doesn’t quite match the high-performance design and features offered by the Watch Ultra 2.
This is to be expected from a device that is older and costs less, but Samsung may feel that its devices are playing a secondary role compared to Apple’s wearables. In the smartwatch market, Apple has been the leader since 2017.
