Today’s computer security systems are quite advanced in detecting and removing malware. However, hackers are constantly finding new ways to bypass these security measures. One of their recent strategies involves disguising a virus as Super Mario 3: Mario Forever.

And who would have thought that such an innocent video game could actually steal all your data? Super Mario 3: Mario Forever is an unofficial game created by Buziol Games. This small group has extensive experience in developing fan-made Mario games, and Super Mario 3: Mario Forever is one of their most famous titles. However, don’t think that their intention is to harm others with viruses or fraudulent games.

According to Kaspersky, the renowned cybersecurity company, there is malicious software disguised as the game. When installed on a computer, it includes a few “surprises,” such as the ‘SupremeBot’ mining client, which is based on the Monero miner, and the dangerous ‘Umbreal Stealer’ malware.

Many have already fallen victim to this scheme: over 300,000 attacks have been recorded so far, with Spain being one of the most affected countries. Once this “bad Mario” is installed, our PC’s performance is slowed down by the operation of the crypto miner. This usually happens in the background, and the victim often doesn’t notice.

However, the worst comes afterwards. Through ‘Umbreal Stealer,’ hackers can steal all sorts of information: login credentials, passwords, and application tokens for platforms like Discord or Telegram (even for games like Minecraft or Roblox). As if that wasn’t enough, it can also take screenshots and even take control of your webcam.

How do I know if my computer has been infected?

If you suspect that you may have been infected with this virus, there are a few things you should look out for: increased power consumption and PC slowdown. If you notice that your computer is slower than usual, it’s likely that there are programs running in the background. You can easily check this through the Task Manager in Windows (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

To prevent this type of malware, prevention is key. When downloading any kind of program, always prioritize official channels. It’s also important to be wary of large offers and incredible opportunities. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. And most importantly, stay updated and informed about the latest cybersecurity threats.
