Half the world uses ChatGPT daily. Not just for doing high school History homework, but its usage has become widespread and international. Companies, employees, and students use it every day. However, its performance has decreased in the last month.
Have you recently felt that ChatGPT isn’t working as well as before? If so, you’re not alone, as numerous users have claimed that the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot has been declining, and OpenAI just confirmed a possible reason for this.
In fact, OpenAI seemed to support the idea that ChatGPT was becoming “lazier” on Twitter. In the post, OpenAI explained that they had heard user feedback and the reason ChatGPT was becoming “lazier” was that it hadn’t been updated since November 11, a whole month.
AI is unpredictable and requires continuous revisions
Although OpenAI stated that this lack of updates was not “intentional,” they added that they were “looking into how to fix it.” They also noted that “the model’s behavior can be unpredictable,” perhaps suggesting that the developers themselves might not have noticed the decline in ChatGPT’s performance until users brought it to light.
Nevertheless, OpenAI has not given any indication of when the issue might be resolved. If you regularly use ChatGPT and have noticed a downward trend in the tool’s capabilities, you’ll have to wait until an update is released.
Underneath the post on X, OpenAI further clarified the issue. A user asked the developer how it was possible for ChatGPT to become lazier.
In response, OpenAI explained, “To be clear, the idea isn’t that the model has changed in any way since November 11th. It’s just that differences in the model’s behavior can be subtle – only a subset of prompts may degrade, and clients and staff may take a long time to notice and address these patterns.”
Other comments suggested ways to restore ChatGPT to its former ability, such as using the phrase “take a deep breath” or instructing the chatbot to “reason step by step.” These could serve as temporary solutions until OpenAI is able to fix the underlying issue.
The performance degradation of ChatGPT comes shortly after Google announced its own rival to ChatGPT called Gemini. However, despite the search giant’s striking promises, numerous reports have emerged claiming that its capabilities are less than what was advertised.
