When it comes to virtual reality, it’s easy to think about the experiences of adult users, but what about children? Is anyone going to think about the children?! (Yes, that was a reference to The Simpsons). While VR headset brands advise or even restrict usage to adults, Meta wants to be more permissive with youngsters.

In a recent blog post, Meta announced a few days ago that they will allow adolescents as young as 10 years old to use both the Meta Quest 2 and the upcoming Meta Quest 3. However, as many may assume, these young users will need to have the authorization of their parents or legal guardians.

According to the blog post, Meta will establish a new type of accounts that can be set up by parents or guardians. These accounts will require parental confirmation each time an app or VR game is to be used. Furthermore, parents or guardians will have the ability to manage the applications their children can use, as well as set usage time limits for each one.

Meta also clarifies the use of data collected through these types of accounts: “We will use the information we gather about 10, 11, and 12-year-old children through our Meta Quest products to provide them with age-appropriate experiences. We do not provide advertisements to this age group. Parents will also have the option to choose whether their children’s data is used to improve the experience, and they can delete their children’s accounts, including all associated data.”

A feature that will undoubtedly be well-received by parents or guardians who are concerned about their children’s use of virtual reality. In addition to the upcoming Meta Quest 3, set to release in September, Meta is also working on VR glasses codenamed “Ventura” that would be sold at a more affordable price.
