It’s almost here. Google released Android 14 Beta 5 several days ago, marking the final scheduled update within the Android 14 beta timeline. The truth is, this version came somewhat unexpectedly as it wasn’t initially included in the main calendar published by Google. According to Google, this will be the last beta we receive before the official release of Android 14.
What’s coming in Beta 5?
Even though Google released an unexpected new beta, we now know that there won’t be any more after this. The final version of Android 14 is just around the corner, and Google has already advised developers to wrap up implementation and adaptation tasks for their applications.
In this Beta, we won’t see major new features or exceptional changes. All the work has been focused on bug fixes and overall experience improvements. As mentioned in the Android Developers blog, these are the main features developers should test:
- Partial access to our photo and video gallery: As we know, in Android 14, users can grant apps partial access to their gallery. The all-or-nothing approach is over: now you can precisely choose which photos or videos the requesting app can use.
- Changes in full-screen notifications: In Android 14, only calling and alarm apps can display full-screen notifications. Any app that doesn’t fit these criteria will have restricted notifications. This way, we won’t have to deal with notifications that might be intrusive.
- Non-linear font scaling up to 200%: To improve text visibility, Android 14 will allow font scaling up to 200%. Users can adjust this feature according to their needs in the accessibility settings.
