Meta is reinforcing its data protection measures in Europe to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In the coming weeks, users of Facebook and Instagram will start receiving notifications asking them to choose how their information is shared across Meta’s different services.

According to Meta in a blog post, from now on, Facebook and Instagram users will be able to decide whether they want their Messenger and Instagram accounts to share data with Facebook, and if they want Marketplace and games to use their Facebook information.

In addition to the above, European users can now access Instagram and Facebook for free with ads (as before), or they have the option to subscribe to remove ads. If users choose the subscription option to stop seeing ads, their information will not be used for advertising purposes.

Meta is focusing on improving the privacy of its users’ data after Facebook was accused last week of actively sharing data about each user with thousands of brands. The investigation, conducted by Consumer Reports, found that, on average, about 2,230 companies actively share data about each user with the social network.
