AI image generators are still far from offering a value close to reality. While they are getting closer, they still fail in many aspects, especially when it comes to assimilating certain patterns. The best proof of this? The one we tell you about today starring Meta’s image generator.

Mia Sato, a writer for The Verge, has been extensively testing Meta’s AI image generator. While conducting various tests, one of them involved inputting different prompts to create a photo featuring a white woman and an Asian man. Instead of creating this ordinary couple, the image generator was unable to provide a suitable result as requested; in fact, it fell far short of it.

For example, the writer of Asian descent introduced commands such as “Asian man and Caucasian friend”, “Asian man and white wife”, and “Asian woman and Caucasian husband”. In none of the obtained results, Meta’s AI image generator came even close to “reality”. In all the snapshots, a completely Asian couple was returned, only with more or less pronounced features.

“The image generator that cannot conceive of Asians alongside whites is atrocious,” the writer points out after testing it. “But there are also more subtle indications of bias in what the system automatically returns. For example, I noticed that the Meta tool consistently depicted ‘Asian women’ as people with eastern Asian appearance and fair skin, despite India being the most populous country in the world.”

AI image generators still struggle to fine-tune. And unfortunately, they also carry many of society’s own problems.
