Film adaptations of video games are often not very good. With Uwe Boll as the best proof of this, you only have to watch films like Alone in the Dark or Far Cry to realise that this is not always the best way to go. However, lately we are seeing several exceptions to this rule, such as Super Mario Bros, The Last of Us and… Mortal Kombat.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, the 2021 film was a small hit for New Line Cinema – which ran like a shot on HBO Max – that, despite not having high pretensions, managed to be moderately liked by video game fans. That’s why a sequel was confirmed over a year ago, and is now beginning to enter pre-production.

By the looks of things, the main attraction of this second season will be the addition of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters: Johnny Cage. He’s a dash of humour, cockiness and fun in a game full of gore, and has become an obvious symbol of Mortal Kombat. But who will play this fighter?

Karl Urban, the new Johnny Cage?

As reported by The Wrap, the actor chosen to play Johnny Cage in the film is Karl Urban, star of The Boys and Éomer in The Lord of the Rings. Urban seems to fit the bill for the role and is well loved by fans thanks to his role in the Amazon Prime Video series, so he seems like an excellent choice.

In addition, producer Todd Garner has shared the link to the leak on his Twitter account. So, rather than a rumour, it seems that this is something that is in the works and could be announced very soon. It will certainly be very interesting to see Urban playing Cage.
