If you’re a fan of real-time strategy games, the Munich-based studio Mimimi Games was undoubtedly one of your favorites. And I say “was” because we’re talking about a studio that’s bidding farewell and closing its doors for good.

So, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew was their last game. The developer has stated that they will continue to support the title for a while and are already working on a patch and additional content.

Many fans will be perplexed, as the studio had been releasing hit after hit since 2016’s Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, including 2016’s Blades of the Shogun, 2020’s Desperados III, and 2021’s Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – Aiko’s Choice.

And Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew was the studio’s first self-published title.

The reason behind a farewell that’s hard to comprehend

The founders of Mimimi Games explained that the decision was made due to a combination of a stressful situation and limited income due to the niche nature of the genre.

“Creating these games was amazing and incredibly exhausting at the same time. Achieving the level of quality that Mimimi aspires to is challenging and requires focus and dedication. We also have to acknowledge that our future production costs are growing faster than the potential income of our genre. The increase in financial pressure and risk level became unsustainable,” they explained.

“Furthermore, every time our games approached release and finally became fun to play, a new struggle for funding the next projects began, making this cycle continuous,” they concluded.

The heads of Mimimi also mentioned that switching genres for new projects isn’t an option, as it would further stress the team. Additionally, they lack the experience to create games in other genres.

At least, all of Mimimi’s games will remain playable on all storefronts. Honestly, it’s worth trying their titles, even if it’s posthumously.
