Although Microsoft continues to add new features to OneDrive to enhance the user experience, the company is not shy about removing something that users don’t use much. According to a blog post from the company, the ability to upload files to OneDrive directly from URLs is precisely one of those features that not many users benefit from, so it has proceeded to remove it.
Uploading files to OneDrive directly from URLs is currently available as a preview for OneDrive Personal. However, due to low usage and high maintenance costs, Microsoft will no longer support this feature starting on March 29, 2024.

According to Microsoft, the feature may stop working at any time and without prior notice after the indicated date. The change does not affect the files you uploaded to OneDrive from URLs, which will continue to exist after March 29 unless you delete them, of course.
Although the abandonment of the functionality of uploading files from URLs may disappoint some users, Microsoft will release next month several useful AI features for OneDrive, including allowing Copilot to investigate files to answer queries and make document summaries.
