How many times have you been playing an online video game and suddenly been bombarded with a barrage of insults? Unfortunately, the answer is likely “many times.” Toxicity in online gaming is rampant, whether it’s Fortnite, Call of Duty, or FIFA. The specific game doesn’t matter because users continue to hurl insults regardless of the genre. Well, Xbox wants to tackle this problem head-on, even in voice chats.

Thanks to the Xbox Insider program – the same one that allows players to test many console updates before their official release – we have learned about a very innovative feature for reporting toxic comments. The methodology is as follows: any player can capture and upload a 60-second audio clip that contains the relevant insults. Once this is done, the Xbox team will verify the existence of the insults and take appropriate action, including issuing bans.

Microsoft already has a proactive moderation system in place for text, images, and videos. However, with audio, they aim to take it a step further, always striving to ensure that “if a player experiences something in our community that they don’t like and want to report it, they have the option to do so in different ways,” says Kim Kunes from the Xbox team.

The development team is focused on making this tool as non-intrusive as possible for players. In other words, it should be used and reported in a natural and organic manner, without interfering with gameplay or causing issues. They have also emphasized that Xbox will not be listening to our voice chats, but will only review what users send to them (in case there were any doubts regarding privacy).
