After several months of rumors and alleged leaks, Sony confirmed yesterday, on October 10th, the release of a new version of PlayStation 5. This new model, which is slightly smaller, lighter, and includes the ability to attach/detach its Blu-ray disc drive, will replace the existing PS5 and PS5 Digital versions, which will no longer be sold once the current stock is depleted.
While one of its major features is the ability to attach and detach its disc drive, which can even be purchased separately if you buy the Digital version, many people were wondering if this “PS5 Slim” (unofficial name) would also include the capability to increase its storage by installing fourth-generation NVMe M.2 SSD drives.
Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long for Sony to address this concern. In a statement to IGN regarding this issue, a PlayStation spokesperson confirmed that “there are no changes with the new model.”
Exactly, not only will the PS5 Slim be expandable like the previous version, but the installation process will remain the same: by removing the side cover and inserting the SSD into a dedicated slot for storage units.
However, the new version of PlayStation 5 will come with a larger internal SSD capacity than the previous model, with a total storage of 825 GB, of which users can utilize 667 GB (the rest is reserved for the operating system and system applications).
This confirmation from PlayStation is a great relief, considering that video games are becoming larger and occupy more disk space. To the point that if you install more than 5-6 recent AAA games, your console will likely notify you that it’s running low on storage space.
