A new legal battle seems to be emerging within the video game industry. Remedy Entertainment, the creators of titles such as Max Payne and Alan Wake, are in the midst of a legal dispute with Take Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games. The reason? The R in Remedy’s new logo looks “too” similar to that of the creators of Grand Theft Auto.
As reported by RespawnFirst, Take Two filed two claims last year with the UK and EU Intellectual Property Offices against Remedy’s new logo. According to Rockstar’s owners, the new R in Remedy’s logo could cause “confusion among the public“.
On the other hand, Take Two has not provided much more information apart from their own documents with the Rockstar logo to oppose Remedy’s use of the R. In Europe, both parties have requested a two-month extension before taking the case to court. If they finally reach an agreement, it will not be necessary to continue the fight in the courts.
Through its website, Remedy unveiled its new logo on April 14, 2023, which abandoned the classic bullet inherited from the Max Payne era. The Finnish developer explained that this new image better represented the wide range of games developed by Remedy: “It was time to update and redefine our visual identity to bring more coherence, showcase our evolution over the years, and better express the current Remedy.”
The truth is that Take Two is known for taking the protection of its intellectual properties to the extreme. Last year, the company also embarked on another fight over the name of It Takes Two, the video game developed by Hazelight Studios.
