Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has returned to the company’s board of directors after a recent investigation. Altman was fired and quickly rehired as the CEO of the company, and also removed from its board following a controversy that took place in November. OpenAI also announced that it would form a new board of directors as a result of the incident.
“We have reached the unanimous conclusion that Sam and Greg [Brockman, the president of OpenAI] are the right leaders for OpenAI,” said last Friday Bret Taylor, chairman of the OpenAI board, in a blog post by the company.
In its investigation into the incident that took place in November, the law firm WilmerHale “found that the previous board’s decision did not arise from concerns about product safety or protection, development pace, OpenAI’s finances, or its statements to investors, clients, or business partners,” OpenAI said in the blog post.

“On the contrary, it was a consequence of the breakdown of the relationship and the loss of trust between the previous board and Mr. Altman“, reads the blog post. “WilmerHale found that the previous board implemented their decision in a shortened timeframe, without prior notice to key stakeholders, and without a thorough investigation or an opportunity for Mr. Altman to address the concerns of the previous board.”
