Nintendo always likes to end its Direct presentations with a big final announcement, and to be honest, the second half of 2023 was lacking a bit in that regard. That’s why they have decided to go all out and end on a high note: with a new Super Mario game. This time, with a twist that no one saw coming. And to top it off, it’s a 2D Super Mario game.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a new 2D Super Mario game where we control the plumber as he tries to prevent the Mushroom Kingdom from falling. But here’s the catch: this game has an incredibly psychedelic character, with vibrant colors, constant changes in the scenery, and even strange transformations of the characters. This has led to numerous jokes about how Super Mario has supposedly turned to drugs for his new two-dimensional adventure.
In fact, a new Super Mario game is quite significant because it has been quite some time since the franchise had a completely new game. The latest installment in the franchise was Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, released on February 12, 2021, as a remaster of Super Mario 3D World, a Wii U game from 2013. The last entirely original game in the franchise was Super Mario Odyssey, launched in 2017. Similarly, the last 2D game featuring the character was New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Nintendo Switch, which was an enhanced version of New Super Mario Bros. U from Wii U, released in 2012. In other words, we had gone over a decade without a new 2D Super Mario game.
To experience this peculiar reimagining of Super Mario Bros., we won’t have to wait much longer as it is set to be released on October 20. Until then, all we can do is speculate and dream about the reasons behind Mario’s trippy adventure and whether it’s turning out to be a wild ride for him.
