Tom Holland is one of Hollywood’s hottest actors. Ever since he was cast as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has been continuously working on a variety of blockbuster films. However, we had yet to see him as the lead in a TV series… and the moment has finally arrived.
“The Crowded Room” is a fictional series on Apple TV+ that has just premiered, with Tom Holland portraying the character of Danny Sullivan, a man arrested for his involvement in a 1979 shooting in New York City. It is a thriller that Apple promotes as fascinating, narrated through a series of interviews conducted by the incisive interrogator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried). But has it achieved the expected success?
Tom Holland’s series convinces no one
Although everything seemed set for “The Crowded Room” to be a great series, further boosting Holland’s career and even potentially earning him nominations for the Golden Globes, things haven’t gone well for Apple TV+.
The series has received only a 31% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a score of 48 on Metacritic. Some of the comments from critics have been as harsh as “Rarely has a series so ineptly masked its main mystery… A 10-part fiasco that gives away its essential secret in the credits” (The Daily Beast) or “It’s hard to say exactly what this 10-hour psychological thriller thinks it’s doing” (San Francisco Chronicle).
While some of the audience hasn’t been as harsh towards the series, there’s no doubt that this setback for Apple TV+ highlights the need for the brand to fine-tune its offerings in the future if it wants to maintain its reputation for quality, as seen with shows like “Ted Lasso” or “Severance.” Similarly, this applies to Tom Holland, who, apart from Spider-Man, hasn’t had much success with his roles, not even in “Uncharted.”
