House of the Dragon has become one of HBO Max’s best series. The Game of Thrones spin-off has managed to live up to its impressive predecessor series, and fans of House Targaryen are looking forward to its second season, which will focus more on the main characters’ children and open up new storylines.

However, not everything could have been so beautiful in the creation of House of the Dragon. Obviously, after a series as impressive as Game of Thrones, HBO had to plan very well what they would do next in the Westeros universe. And, as Indie Wire has just learned, the series was on the verge of being cancelled.

A spin-off that was thought to have failed

Ryan Condal, showrunner House of the Dragon, has explained that it was he and author George RR Martin who saved the series from cancellation. As soon as Game of Thrones ended, HBO began working on several spin-off projects in parallel, and this was one of the worst, to the point that the platform had almost completely shelved the series.

This was the most important spin-off for him [George RR Martin] and he wasn’t happy with the way it was going. HBO was going to shelve it, but he insisted they didn’t do that; he asked to be given another chance.”

So, thanks to Martin’s insistence, they finally developed the series from a different point of view to how they had originally conceived it, and finally came up with this impressive first season that was so successful last year. Of course, they will have to do their best to live up to it in the second season, although knowing them, I’m sure there won’t be any problems.

Meanwhile, HBO is already developing its second Game of Thrones spin-off: The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The adaptation of the Tales of Dunk and Egg will arrive on the new Max platform, and promises to be a fresh look at the Westeros universe.
