The live-action remake of the 1989 classic didn’t achieve the expected box office success, although it’s now set to have a new lease on life that might compensate for this, thanks to its arrival on the Disney Plus streaming platform. The company has now set a release date for The Little Mermaid on Disney Plus for free with a subscription: September 6, 2023. Starting from this day, the movie starring Halle Bailey will be available on the VOD service, offering a fresh opportunity to captivate Disney fans.
The Little Mermaid premiered on May 26, so its streaming release will come a little over three months after the typical waiting period for landing on platforms. The film, as a reminder, grossed $564 million against an initial budget of $250 million, which might appear to be a significant success. However, considering promotional expenses, it becomes clear that it has fallen short of being a success for Disney.
The critics, nevertheless, were more positive towards The Little Mermaid. It was hailed as one of the best Disney live-action adaptations in recent years, so it’s possible that it might find a new audience spectrum soon, thanks to Disney Plus subscribers.
