Feudal Japan lovers are in luck. Disney + will premiere its new samurai series Shogun on February 27th, and we got a glimpse of the new trailer during the Super Bowl halftime.
Shogun adapts the plot of the novel of the same name written by James Clavell. Published in 1975, Clavell’s book was brought to television about five years after its publication. However, the Disney+ version promises to be much more faithful to the book than its predecessor was.
Set in the 17th century, it will have John Blackthorne (played by Cosmo Jarvis), a British sailor used as a soldier in the struggle of Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a Japanese leader who fights against his enemies in the Council of Regents, as its protagonist. The destinies of both are also linked to that of the translator Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), who will have to deal with her beliefs, her growing friendship with Blackthorne, and loyalty to her deceased father.
The cast of Shogun is almost entirely Japanese, with actors like Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, Moeka Hoshi, Shinnosuke Abe and many more.
