Since the release of the first installment of John Wick, many have fantasized about the idea of a prequel telling the origins of the character played by Keanu Reeves, and this finally seems to be happening… but in an unexpected way. As explained by Chad Stahelski, the director behind the four films of the saga, this prequel will arrive in anime format.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director explained that they are developing an animated film that will allow the creators to delve into the protagonist’s background like never before. It will tell the legendary task that allowed Wick to retire and lead a peaceful life with his beloved wife, before the events of the first movie dragged him back into the dark criminal world.

The hidden origins of John Wick

Although this chapter has been briefly mentioned throughout the movies, it has never been shown in detail how John Wick achieved what seemed impossible. Now, finally, we will all be able to witness his legendary feat in a medium that, according to Stahelski, offers much greater creative potential than live-action films.

So far, no details have been revealed about the release date or the platform where this prequel can be watched, and it is still uncertain if Keanu Reeves, who has masterfully portrayed the character, will return to voice John Wick in the animated version. However, it is evident that this new project is an ambitious expansion of the John Wick universe that continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

Even so, this anime is just one more piece in the extensive puzzle that Stahelski and the franchise creators are assembling. With four films already released, the saga has generated a vast universe that continues to expand with multiple projects underway. Among them, the limited series The Continental, which debuted in 2023 stands out, focusing on the famous hotel that serves as a neutral sanctuary for the assassins in Wick’s world, as well as the film Ballerina, scheduled for 2025 with Ana de Armas as the lead. Additionally, the fifth installment is still in development.
