Although The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom did not win the video game of the year award, it is quite clear that Nintendo’s title has been a real phenomenon during this 2023. After the incredible success of its first installment, Breath of the Wild, the Japanese company set about developing a sequel that improved on the first one in every way. Now, will we also have a next part after Tears of the Kingdom?

Eiji Aonuma, producer of these latest games and creator of some of the best Zelda games in the series, has been very clear in a recent interview for GameInformer: there will be no sequel.

In Aonuma’s own words, “that would be making a sequel to one that’s already a sequel, it’s pretty beastly if you think about it!”. “With Tears of the Kingdom we wanted to build on the world we had already created with Breath of the Wild, to exhaust all the possibilities of that universe. To use a word, it’s like an epilogue or apotheosis to what this version of The Legend of Zelda represents. I don’t think we’re going to make a direct sequel to a world like this that we’ve created,” he said.

As for what may come in the future, Eiji Aonuma suggests that the next The Legend of Zelda will be very different from what has been seen to date. Therefore, it would bet on another scale of project, who knows if returning more to the original format to move away from a mega-production as these last two.

When will we have news? That’s the big question on the minds of all of us gamers, but all indications are that we’re going to have to wait a long time.
