The confrontation between Reddit and its own community continues, although some are willing to end it in exchange for certain requests. Since June 12th, a large number of subreddits have “gone dark” to protest against the implementation of a fee system for using Reddit’s API. Since then, Reddit itself (including its CEO) has either refused to improve the situation or has actively worsened it.

Despite being among the most affected by the measures, moderators, along with app developers, have been repeatedly pressured by the Reddit administration (even under the threat of suspension). However, they want everything to return to normalcy in the most peaceful way possible, although not without requesting certain changes.

In several open letters addressed to Reddit, a group of moderators (who do not get paid for their work on the platform) are requesting an “affordable return” of third-party apps to the platform, accessibility options that “match or exceed” what is available in third-party apps, improvements in moderation tools, and the creation of the role of “moderator advocate” within the company.

These requests come from moderators whose communities are still in the dark and who are calling for “a return to the productive dialogue that has served us in the past.” The open letters published in recent days state that, despite Reddit having “almost completely eroded” their trust, “we hope that together we can begin to rebuild it.”

The authors of the open letters (moderators of large subreddits such as r/Funny, r/Jokes, and r/Showerthoughts) are requesting a response from Reddit by June 29th, just one day before most third-party apps cease to function after refusing to pay for the use of the platform’s API.
