The world of video games is evolving. Whether it’s for better or worse, we’ll leave that under the scrutiny of the reader. An example of this change is Warner Bros.’s controversial plans, revealed during the company’s third-quarter earnings presentation.

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros., has explained that the company is focused on transforming its major franchises into gameplay-focused experiences. To achieve this, there will be more titles that are live services, multiplatform releases, and free-to-play extensions. The goal is to “have more players” and “generate higher revenue after purchases.”

Additionally, we have also been able to learn about the financial performance of Mortal Kombat 1, a title that marks the reboot of the famous fighting saga. The truth is that Mortal Kombat 1 is in a splendid moment, as indicated by the numbers: it has managed to sell almost 3 million copies since its mid-September release.

However, it is more than clear that Warner’s true interest lies in microtransactions. In early 2024, we will receive Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, another title focused on cooperative gameplay (though it can also be played solo) and will feature content updates, its own in-game currency, and more.

Although Warner has a clear roadmap, the community doesn’t seem willing to accompany them. Despite the failure of Gotham Knights and the negative reception of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, the company has no plans to stop, as Zaslav made clear in the presentation.
