So many video games come out that it is literally impossible to play them all. Not only that. It is literally impossible to know them all. Anyone who pays attention to the new releases page on Steam knows this. And that’s not even counting everything that comes out on mobile platforms, in addition to other stores or consoles. That’s why, on more than one occasion, little gems go unnoticed. Like Pepper Grinder.
Developed by Ahr Ech Studio, Pepper Grinder is a platform and puzzle game where we embody Pepper, a girl with a huge passion for excavation. She loves digging so much that she always carries Grinder, a gigantic drill with which she can perform impossible feats.
Basically, Pepper Grinder is a platform game. We have to advance, dodge enemies or defeat them, and jump between platforms to avoid falling into the void. What makes the game different is Grinder. Our drill. Acting as a multitool, we can use it to dig underground (or propel ourselves through water!), kill our enemies, help us propel ourselves in the air, and even solve numerous puzzles throughout the game.
Because in Pepper Grinder everything revolves around the drill. The boundaries of the stage become blurred because we can move on land or water. Many artifacts can only be activated with the drill. And some platforms will only react to the vigorous thrust of our tool. Something that gives Pepper Grinder a special flavor. Even if it remains a platformer, with excellent level design, but a very classic platformer.
We can’t deny that the game is not particularly difficult either. If we advance slowly and carefully, it’s easy to solve any given situation. But for those who want an extra challenge, going at high speeds with Grinder is not difficult, and finding hidden objects is not always easy. This adds an extra layer of difficulty for those who want that extra challenge. Even if the bosses at the end of each level already raise the overall difficulty of the game.
Perhaps the biggest drawback of Pepper Grinder can be its greatest virtue. With an approximate duration of 3 or 4 hours, being able to complete all its content in around 7 or 8 hours, it is a short game. Although that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. With the amount of games out there, and the endless list of our pending ones, a more concise game is always appreciated.
