Elon Musk is up to his old tricks again. Not content with decimating the value of Twitter, the Tesla owner also announced on July 23rd that the social media platform would be renamed ‘X’. With this move, we can assert that Twitter will officially go down in history, at least as we knew it.

Elon Musk’s obsession with the letter ‘X’ has quite the history. To begin with, X.com was one of his early ventures, founded in 1999 as an online bank, which later became known as PayPal. From SpaceX to his daughter’s unique name, X AE A-XII, and even xAI, the ‘X’ has always been a prominent element.

In a recent tweet, Elon Musk announced that posts on the platform would now be called “x’s.” Users, accustomed to Musk’s whims and antics, wasted no time responding with jokes and memes:

Indeed, it seems that Musk didn’t take into account the existence of the pornography website ‘Xvideos.’ The association of the letter ‘X’ with this platform has led to hundreds of memes about potential confusions that could arise in the very near future.

No matter what, the new era of ‘X’ is already here. Linda Yaccarino, the new CEO of Twitter, explained the significance of this change, which goes beyond just the name and logo. In her words, “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered around audio, video, messaging, and payments – and will create a global marketplace of ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by artificial intelligence, ‘X’ will connect us all in ways we can barely imagine.”
