Warner Bros. has just released a trailer for filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto’s DC Blue Beetle movie. The film was originally conceived for HBO Max, but then the studio switched to a theatrical release before production on the film began.

DC’s first Latino superhero movie was developed during Walter Hamada’s tenure at the studio. In DC canon, Blue Beetle is friends with Booster Gold, another DC character who is being developed for a TV series.

Xolo Maridueña plays the lead role and his alter ego Jaime Reyes. Jaime Reyes, a recent graduate, returns home full of aspirations for his future, but discovers that his home is not exactly as he left it.

In his quest to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

When the Beetle suddenly chooses Jaime as a symbiotic host, he grants him an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

Soto directs from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, based on characters from the DC universe. That is, this character exists in the comics and comes to the big screen for the first time.

The film will hit theaters on August 18 and can be seen in Imax. We’ll see how this DC movie works, which takes on a little-known superhero in a market already saturated with options.

That the original idea was to release the movie on HBO Max directly instead of in theaters is a detail that we should not overlook if the final result is not what we expected.

Television releases are synonymous with poor quality. Let’s hope we are wrong.
