Mortal Kombat 12 is a long time coming. OK, not as long as Hollow Knight: Silksong or the Internet meme Half-Life 3 (never announced), but fighting game fans are looking forward to it and NetherRealm Studios, the developers of one of the most prestigious fighting game sagas, are giving out information in dribs and drabs.

Well, dropper or rather “bead-counter”. Grains of sand, to be more precise. This week, NetherRealm released a “curious” 10-second teaser for Mortal Kombat 12. An enigmatic teaser to say the least, as all we see is a grain of sand exploding. Just like that.

The teaser is part of a studio video dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Mortal Kombat franchise, in which various professionals talk about their experiences working on Mortal Kombat 11. At the end of the video, NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon warns viewers: “And we’re not done yet.

After a few moments of great hype, Mortal Kombat fans, eager to see some news about Mortal Kombat 12, are finding that it’s just a grain of sand. Exploding. Of course, if it’s a new fatality, it’s “original” to say the least.

While the teaser may not have much more behind it, and may just be another sign of how much fun the good people at NetherRealm have playing with the feelings of Mortal Kombat fans, it could have a hidden meaning behind it.

According to GamesRadar, different endings of Mortal Kombat 11 show us an hourglass that has the power to reset time, which is often used by one of the characters to reshape the timeline. Perhaps the explosion of this mysterious grain of sand can be interpreted as a “big bang” that triggers the reboot of this popular fighting series – is that the point, or is it a complete misdirection? Let’s hope we find out soon.
