London Bound? Here’s How to Dodge the Coronation of Carlos II

The coronation of Charles III, who will be proclaimed King of the United Kingdom at the age of 74, will take place tomorrow. A historic event which, as a curiosity, will not be attended by Meghan Markle, the monarch’s daughter-in-law, and for which a detailed chocolate bust has been made.

London will be dressed up and thousands of people from all over the UK will take to the streets to celebrate the coronation of their new king. But what about the people who don’t care about the event at all? The BBC gives a series of recommendations for those of you who live in England and want to avoid this event at all costs. We summarise them below.

Avoid central London

Possibly the most obvious recommendation, but no less important. With thousands upon thousands of royal fans lining the streets and waving flags, it’s important to avoid the areas around London’s Hyde Park, Green Park and St. James’s Park at all costs. And, if you must leave the house, be aware that both the tube and bus services will be crowded, and roads will be closed around Knightsbridge, Waterloo, Leicester Square and Vauxhall Bridge.

Disconnect

If you have to stay at home, keep in mind that social media will also be full of people talking about the coronation and/or praising the British monarchy, so the best thing to do is to avoid picking up your mobile phone as much as possible and even turn it off. Start painting a picture, read books, play video games, watch a series… By Sunday it will all be over, so don’t worry, it will be over quickly.

Take a weekend getaway

Even if you decide to stay at home and ignore the world around you, unless you have soundproofing in your house, you are likely to hear a lot of noise during the day and at night (including more than one person with too many drinks). In this situation, consider taking a trip to the countryside, the beach or the mountains. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Look for an alternative plan

OK, you can’t/won’t go away for a few days for [insert reason] either, but all is not lost. Not everywhere in England will be full of pro-monarchists; for example, Sheffield’s Dog and Partridge pub will be an “anti-coronation safe space” and London’s Newington Green will host a number of parties where those who don’t sympathise with the royals can enjoy themselves.
