Do you feel like watching a YouTube video, but you can’t understand it because it’s not in your language and there are no subtitles? The platform has started testing a feature that will allow content creators to automatically dub their videos using AI. As reported by TechCrunch, YouTube has partnered with an AI-based dubbing service called Aloud, which is part of an internal Google incubator.

Aloud was launched just a year ago and is a highly versatile AI tool capable of transcribing, translating, and producing a dubbed version of a video using a synthetic voice. This service also allows content creators to review and edit the transcription before the automatic dubbing is generated.

The service can be of great utility on YouTube, where videos have been able to have audio tracks in multiple languages since February. Until now, content creators interested in dubbing their videos had to rely on dubbing companies or freelance professionals to carry out the dubbing.

Thanks to YouTube’s new feature, YouTubers who want to dub their videos in other languages (especially those with audiences from different countries) will have a tool within the platform itself that will allow them to do so using AI, saving the money it costs to hire professionals.

As many would assume, the addition of this tool is going to be a source of intense debates on social media, where the fear of job destruction due to AI has been discussed thousands of times. While a synthetic voice can be a convenient tool in many situations (especially for budget-limited projects and/or non-profit endeavors), creators and companies that aim for high-quality dubbing in their videos should still consider the services of genuine professionals.
