DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that WhatsApp is the number one source for news in numerous countries? Based on a Reuters Institute study, 71,805 respondents from 30 countries have claimed that their major source of news is WhatsApp. Fifty-one percent of the respondents are from Malaysia. On the other hand, only 3% from the United States said that they use WhatsApp to get news.
WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, who were both former Yahoo! employees. Koum got the word "WhatsApp" from the phrase, "what's up" which is widely used as a conversation-starter. Koum also tried to apply for a job on Facebook after leaving Yahoo!, however, he got rejected. Using the $400,000 savings he got from Yahoo!, Koum thought of creating an app for Apple App Store after he purchased an iPhone in 2009. While working on the creation of this app, Koum has taped a note on his desk from the co-founder Brian which reads "No Ads! No Games! No Gimmicks!". This note is their focus and inspiration to create an app that offers a pure messaging experience. The app was successfully released on Apple App Store on February 24, 2009, which is also Koum's birthday. Meanwhile, Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for $19 billion.
