The gaming community is abuzz with whispers of Nintendo’s next big move in the console market, even though the gaming giant has yet to confirm any details.

Some seasoned gaming enthusiasts are convinced that Nintendo has been secretly crafting a sequel to its immensely popular hybrid system for a few years. The anticipation is high, with some insiders predicting that we could see a reveal as soon as the upcoming year.

Next-gen Nintendo speculations

peculation about the nature of this impending console is rife. A segment believes Nintendo might pivot towards a more potent system to rival PlayStation and Xbox’s prowess.

In contrast, another camp speculates a continuation of the hybrid handheld-home console model, akin to the original Switch. A recent Nintendo patent revealed by GameRant seems to lend weight to the latter theory.

Released this year, but filed back in 2022, the disclosed patent sketches out a portable gaming machine. These sketches hint at a departure from the Switch’s iconic design.

Gone are the detachable Joy-Cons. Instead, gamers might find a built-in joystick to the screen’s left, a set of four buttons on the right, and a duo of shoulder buttons crowning the device.

Diving into the design specifics, an intriguing feature emerges at the device’s base: the repositioned home button.

The patent elaborates on this unconventional placement, suggesting its infrequent use during gameplay sessions paved the way for a decluttered device front. This lower section also houses essentials: a USB port, stereo speakers, and a dedicated button for snapping screenshots and recording gameplay moments.

The upper part remains reminiscent of the original Switch but with a twist: the volume and power buttons have traded places. Retro game aficionados will be pleased to note the presence of a headphone jack and a cartridge slot, signaling Nintendo’s nod to tangible game mediums.

What remains ambiguous, however, is the device’s compatibility with the original Switch’s game library, though there’s widespread hope for backward compatibility.

Beyond traditional gameplay

However, the design choice bound to spark the most discussion is the simplified control setup: the device showcases just six buttons coupled with a single joystick. But there’s more than meets the eye.

The patent cites the inclusion of a pressure-sensitive touchscreen, hinting at game designs tailored for this feature. Moreover, potential adaptability is indicated with mention of an additional directional control input on the device’s right, aligning it closer to the beloved original Switch layout.
