In an initiative to combat vehicle theft, Washington, D.C., has started providing Apple AirTags for free to residents in certain areas with high rates of this crime. This measure follows the footsteps of a similar program already underway in New York City, where technology is being utilized as a support tool for 21st-century police tactics, taking the AirTag from finding keys to apprehending criminals.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced last Wednesday, as reported by WAMU (via 9to5mac), the new program that focuses on making vehicles more traceable in case of theft. The devices will be distributed at specific events over the next few months, and interested residents must provide proof of residence in designated areas to be eligible.

The local police will help participants “install” AirTags in their cars, focusing, among other things, on preventing them from being discovered or removed from the vehicle by a potential thief. In this regard, especially considering that, although we will have to cover the cost of the AirTag ourselves, we can also install one in our vehicle, there are several recommendations.

Although it might be easier, it’s better not to install it on the external part of the vehicle, such as inside the bumper. Inside the car, it will always be more sheltered, and in the event of theft, there is not as much time for a thorough search. That being said, we can opt for a slit in the dashboard, under the seats, or even inside the door panels. Another option is in the headliner or inside the spare tire area.

In any case, be careful not to install it too close to the engine, as high temperatures could damage the AirTag. Similarly, avoid enclosing it in metal compartments, as they can weaken the signal emitted and received by the device.

In the context of car security, AirTags provide a discreet and efficient way to keep track of a vehicle’s whereabouts, increasing the likelihood of recovering the vehicle in case of theft and capturing the criminals. We are unaware of the data the program is providing in New York; however, the fact that Washington is joining the trend is significant.

With the expansion of these programs, authorities hope to deter thieves and provide a quick solution in cases of theft. While the long-term impact of AirTags on the prevention and resolution of car thefts is yet to be seen, considering that Apple AirTags are currently available at a low price for a limited time, the adoption of this technology could expand to more cities soon. We will see how events unfold.
