Undoubtedly, the horror film industry was at its peak in the 1980s when Steven Spielberg decided to produce one of the most acclaimed movies in the history of the genre: Poltergeist, directed by Tobe Hooper. Terrifying and truly one of a kind, the film quickly became a phenomenon. There were even rumors that it was cursed due to the events that followed its release, including various deaths and misfortunes of all kinds.
But Amazon Prime Video doesn’t seem too concerned about this supposed curse. That’s why they have just announced a series with the same title, aiming to bring the horror film to new times and new formats. And the truth is, it looks very promising: the production will be handled by Amblin, the studio behind the original movie.
A terrifying series that aims to bring old horror into the new times
As reported by Variety, the producers will be Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television. We also know that the series will share the universe with the 1982 classic but will completely distance itself from the failed 2015 remake, where Gil Kenan changed numerous elements of the original film, resulting in a rather mediocre outcome.
It’s possible that the new Amazon Prime Video series might incorporate elements from Poltergeist II: The Other Side, a film that delivered some very terrifying moments, or even from its largely forgotten third installment. However, the most intriguing approach would be to create a completely new series by drawing upon the original film’s elements.
Although production has started, there is no information available about filming or release dates. We’ll have to wait for Amazon Prime Video to provide more details. Needless to say, we are eagerly awaiting updates.
