Who doesn’t fondly remember those mornings when we watched in awe the outrageous ‘Humor Amarillo’. The Japanese program (yes, it’s not Chinese), whose original name is ‘Fūun! Takeshi Jō’, showed us a hilarious obstacle course where contestants made their way through various games, traps, and even received a few whacks. Essentially, we were witnessing the precursor to what would later become Grand Prix.
‘Humor Amarillo’ achieved the impossible and became a massive phenomenon among young people. However, the key to its success in Spain lay in the dubbing actors who narrated the contest throughout its broadcast. Juan Herrera and Miguel Ángel Coll were in charge of the first stage of ‘Humor Amarillo’ in Spain, aired on Telecinco during the 90s. Later on, they were followed by Fernando Costilla and Paco Bravo on Cuatro in 2006.
Thanks to them, characters like ‘el Chino Cudeiro’, Pinky-Winky, or the reporter Pepe remain in the memories of thousands of millennials, even to this day.
Amazon Prime Video knows how to play with our emotions and has resurrected the show under a new name, ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ (a title much more faithful to the original and less derogatory, it must be said). But that’s not the only change, as ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ introduces a new cast of dubbing actors: Dani Rovira, Jorge Ponce, and Eva Soriano. But fear not, Fernando Costilla and Paco Bravo are also returning, this time as reporters.
As if that wasn’t enough, ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ will also feature the collaboration of Mister Jagger, who will lend his voice to the General. Venga Monjas wanted to join the party as well, but with their music. The extravagant duo has composed a song for each of the episodes we will see on Amazon Prime Video (a total of eight).
In several interviews, both comedians assure that they have tried by all means to maintain the essence of the original format in ‘Takeshi’s Castle’. Although some expressions and names will be lost (like the title itself, ‘Humor Amarillo’), others remain unchanged: “¡Al turrón!” or “las zamburguesas” are a good proof of that.
