The bigger a game gets the easier it is for it to break somewhere. No amount of testing or hard work can prevent this. Every project tends towards chaos, and the bigger it gets, the more chaos it produces around it. This is a universal law that they know at Larian and that’s why they never promised that Baldur’s Gate 3 was going to come out without bugs or problems. Even if they made us reinstall the game. A huge game. But what even they themselves could never have imagined is that the very amount of things players can do in the world is what could end up blowing up the game.

In Baldur’s Gate 3 many of our actions have consequences that the game must take into consideration for future encounters and situations. All of this must be saved, categorized and taken into account, which is why the game has a “history” database, where the actions and choices of each game are saved so as not to lose anything along the way. The problem is that at Larian they have found that, even having set a very large limit, many players have managed to blow up the capacity of this database.

What does this mean? That the Baldur’s Gate 3 game saves are big. Huge. Absolutely massive. To the point that the game’s own database was incapable of handling them without causing all sorts of bugs because of it.

Now, thanks to hotfix 2.1, there is no longer any limit to how big our saved game can be. The database limit is now virtually infinite and the game should be able to handle any number of actions and decisions we make throughout our game. Except for the problem that the game saves are still extremely large. So, even though the database is now basically impossible to crash, that doesn’t mean it can’t crash your hard drive if you create too many different save points. But we’re afraid there’s not much Larian can do about that.
