For us, it is one of the best movies of the year. And for the audience as well, as it is breaking box office records and critics are endorsing it: it’s a blockbuster.
Rejoice, Barbie fans, because we have a clearer idea of when you’ll be able to watch the cinematic phenomenon from the comfort of your home through streaming.
Unfortunately, fans who are eager to rewatch the fantastic comedy from their sofas will have to wait a little longer. During the Warner Bros. Discovery investor conference for the second quarter of 2023, CEO David Zaslav confirmed that Barbie will debut on Max this fall. No more Netflix.
But we will have to wait for the cinemas to stop making money
In a less surprising news, Zaslav also explained that Barbie will premiere on Max, WBD’s main streaming service, after its theatrical run.
For those not subscribed to Max or non-U.S. viewers without access, the movie starring Margot Robbie will also be available for rent and/or purchase through video-on-demand services simultaneously. It’s likely that it will be available for rent on Prime Video.
Barbie, which is part of the massive double feature on July 21 known as “Barbenheimer” (Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, being the other half), has recently surpassed the $800 million mark worldwide.
Barbie faces only two contenders for the coveted title of “highest-grossing film of 2023”: Super Mario Bros. and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which are now available for streaming on Peacock and Disney Plus, respectively.
As the cinematic sensation directed by Greta Gerwig approaches the milestone of one billion dollars, WBD is keen on keeping it in theaters worldwide.
With relatively few, but equally highly anticipated new films arriving until the third quarter of 2023, Barbie will undoubtedly continue to dominate the box office for many more weeks. However, for viewers in Spain without access to Max, the availability of the movie on the current HBO Max remains to be seen.
