The sixth and final season of Black Mirror has generated very mixed opinions among the audience. Even though it had been a long time since a new season of the series was released, it hasn’t pleased everyone. With the exception of a few episodes that received general approval, most of them have failed to fully convince the audience.

Charlie Brooker, the series creator, has been criticized because, according to many opinions, the show lost its edge after being acquired by Netflix. Furthermore, in its latest season, this has been further expanded due to criticism that suggests it no longer carries the same spirit as the previous ones, especially because many of its stories are anachronistic rather than dystopian. In response, the director has answered.

Charlie Brooker responds to criticism

One of the criticisms we sometimes receive is: ‘I preferred the show when it was British, and everyone in it was miserable, and everything smelled a bit like crap, and all the stories were horrible. And then it moved to Netflix, and suddenly everything is sunny and happy, and everyone has wonderful teeth, and it’s full of Hollywood stars, and it’s lost that edge,'” Brooker begins. But he’s ready to respond to all of this.

“When I first came to the US, everyone expected me to be like the Unabomber. But Netflix had little to do with the change. You could say that the happiest episode I ever wrote was ‘San Junipero,’ and I did that on my own. I knew that now we’re on a global platform, so we have to make these stories a bit more international. And I wanted to mix it up a bit, not keep making dark marathons.”

However, he believes that the spirit of the show hasn’t changed at all. “The episode from season 6, Loch Henry, is bloody unpleasant, more unpleasant than anything we’ve done,” he said. So, for Brooker, nothing has changed.
