The second model in BMW’s Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup is currently undergoing cold-weather testing, with an anticipated debut slated for 2026.
This follows the announcement of the first model—a compact crossover named the iX3—which is in pre-production and set to make its debut at the Munich Auto Show in September 2025.
The iX3 name revisits a previously used designation for an electric version of the X3 that never made it to the U.S. market.
This renewed focus on electric vehicles underscores BMW’s commitment to compete in the growing EV
In addition, a prototype electric sedan is being tested in Sweden, which may carry the badge of BMW’s iconic 3-Series and could resurrect the i3 moniker.
The original i3, which was produced from 2013 to 2022, was pivotal in BMW’s electric journey, with over 250,000 units sold. It was known for its unique design and innovative use of materials, including carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.
The new iteration aims to address the gap left by the original i3’s departure, offering a more conventional design that aims to be less polarizing, as stated by BMW’s development chief Frank Weber.
The Neue Klasse marks a significant shift in BMW’s approach to electric vehicle engineering, incorporating cutting-edge technologies. Among these are an 800-volt electrical architecture, a transition to cylindrical battery cells, and advanced front induction motors.
The new chassis-control unit, dubbed the “Heart of Joy,” is expected to elevate the driving experience. This renewed focus on electric vehicles underscores BMW’s commitment to compete in the growing EV market and better meet customer demand for smaller, entry-level electric models.
