Borderlands is such a bad movie because of COVID, according to its director
Planning a movie over the Internet is not the optimal way to do these things

The Borderlands movie, which premiered in 2024, has generated a wave of criticism for its disrespect towards the original material. Iconic characters like Tiny Tina and Claptrap have been radically altered, presenting a version of Tina as a genetically modified “chosen one” and a Claptrap that resembles a low-budget robot with desires to destroy humans, a reinterpretation that has left many fans disappointed. This type of transformation has been labeled as a use of stereotypical clichés instead of maintaining the distinctive characteristics of the characters.
Never plan anything over Zoom, apparently
Director Eli Roth, who did not have the final cut of the film, has expressed his bewilderment about the final result. In interviews, Roth has mentioned the complications that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to the production process, indicating that filming and coordinating rehearsals became increasingly difficult. “None of us anticipated how complicated it was going to be with COVID,” Roth said, referring to the difficulty of doing reshoots and coordinating the cast and crew amid outbreaks of contagion.
Although respect for the source material is not the only way to create a good adaptation, the Borderlands movie has been criticized for its lack of inspiration and entertainment, being unfavorably compared to other low-budget film productions that have managed to capture a sense of humor or charm. The press has pointed out that the film lacks the fun that characterizes other adaptations, resulting in a cinematic experience that fails to connect with its audience. Critics have stated that this movie is not even “bad in a good way,” but simply “uninspired.” Something you can always check for yourself.
