BYD, the Chinese giant of electric vehicles (EV) has announced that it expects its first EVs with solid-state batteries to hit the market in 2027.
During the second annual summit on solid-state batteries, the company’s CTO, Sun Huajun, revealed that between 2027 and 2029 a demonstration phase with limited production will take place, with the aim of starting large-scale production in 2030.
The new BYD batteries will be sulfur-based, which promises a longer lifespan, faster charging times, and greater stability.
The future of batteries lies in sulfur
Although BYD has already made significant advances in this technology, mass adoption is expected to take time, as the company clings to the production of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries for the next 15 to 20 years due to cost and supply constraints.
In a context of increasing competition, CATL, the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, is also developing solid-state batteries and plans to start production in 2027, initially on a small scale.
These batteries have been promoted as “the next generation” of battery technology due to their high energy density, faster charging, and better safety compared to conventional lithium batteries.
Despite its promises, large-scale adoption faces challenges, including high costs and issues in scaling the production of solid electrolyte. In addition to BYD and CATL, other automakers such as Hyundai, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota are also in the race to develop this innovative technology.
It is rumored that Hyundai will soon unveil its pilot line of solid-state batteries, while Honda already showed advancements in this area last year. With the growing focus on electrification, the development of solid-state batteries remains a hot topic among automotive giants.
