Bringing a live-action adaptation of One Piece to life seemed like an impossible feat, and yet, Netflix silenced all doubts with a first season that lived up to the early arcs of the series. The series has proven to be an incredible success, topping the charts in 96 countries, a record the platform had never before achieved.
However, as we mentioned in the series review, not everything is done yet. One Piece is an extremely hyperbolic series, yes, but it is much less so in its early arcs. As it progresses, everything becomes stranger, and the characters become more extreme… which means they will have a very, very difficult time adapting everything that comes next.
The future of the live-action adaptation will depend on this decision
Adapting Tony Tony Chopper for the second season of the live-action adaptation will indeed be a significant challenge for Netflix. Chopper is a unique character, being a reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a human-like form. His design and appearance are quite distinctive, and capturing the essence of his character in a realistic way while staying true to the source material will be a demanding task for the production team. Fans of One Piece will be eager to see how this iconic character is portrayed in the live-action series.
The internet has been filled with ideas on how to get Tony Tony Chopper’s appearance right in the live-action adaptation, but none of them seem to convince too much. Without a doubt, the best thing they could do is to go for something like the appearance of Pokémon in Detective Pikachu or Sonic in his own movies. But considering that almost everything we’ve seen from One Piece has been done with practical effects… this could be quite challenging.
Another option is that Chopper in the live-action series often has a more humanoid hybrid appearance, which doesn’t make him so short… and perhaps with prosthetics, they could make it work to some extent. Nevertheless, it remains a very challenging task for the creators of the series.
