OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT that allows reading aloud the results displayed by the popular chatbot. Read Aloud, as this new feature is called, is already available in the web version of ChatGPT and in the Android and iOS apps.

This new feature is able to speak in 37 languages, automatically detecting the language of the text it is reading, and it is available for both GPT-4 and GPT-3.5. Read Aloud seems to be OpenAI’s response to the integration of similar multimodal features in competing AIs, as recently happened with Anthropic.

ChatGPT launched a voice chat feature in September of last year where users can directly ask the chatbot without the need to type, but the new feature will allow ChatGPT to read the written responses out loud and for users to configure the chatbot to always respond verbally to questions (option that is disabled by default).

While in the web version of ChatGPT an speaker icon is displayed below the text, in the mobile apps, users can long press the text to open the text-to-speech player, where they can play, pause or rewind the reading of the chatbot’s responses.
